Painting of the Month - 2b or not 2b ;-)

Here is our old friend William, his hobbies include cross stitching, growing gigantic courgettes and watching "The Great British Bake Off".  He is a true believer in moving with the times. He is impressed by text shorthand, chat acronyms and netlingo. He appreciates the use of such cryptic codes as, SWAK, 420 and ,!!!! Although, there are moments when he too is at a loss....  Does anyone really use AFAHMASP?

The twitter thing has really taken his fancy, he was inspired by Mr Bluebird, all day long he would hear him tweet, and then it came to him... 2B or not 2B;-)

BTW, there is also this thing called netiquette, but I digress.

One reason acronyms and shorthand are used so widely is that it's quicker and easier to type a few letters rather than to type the full expression. The Great Cornish Pasty

I need some help! Actually, Dino thinks I need A LOT of help, but that is another post, this is food dilemma.

I am having a little difficulty understanding the great Cornish Pasty.
Don't get me wrong, I am a fan. They are delicious, hearty, healthy and wholesome. They are found in every single village, town and hamlet in Cornwall, at fund raising events, at school fetes, at yacht clubs, at petrol stations, even at weddings. Recipes that have been handed down through countless generations, some recipes so prized, that the family honour is often at stake.

Now my problem is this, why is a FISH pasty so hard to come by?
I have only seen, and been able to taste, a bought fish pasty, from one place, Padstow (from you know who) and it was divine! In order for me to indulge in this pleasure, I have to make my own... with roasted mackerel or with smoked haddock or with a classic fish pie mix, and I must say, they are simply scrumptious!

I can hear you all screaming "That is NOT a true pasty", I am well aware of the original pasty filling.

According to the young ladies at today's fund raising event in Fowey, the finest traditional pasty has a distinctive ‘D’ shape and is crimped on one side. The pasty is made up of lard, margarine, flour water and salt, finished off with an egg glaze. The filling consists of skirt beef, swede, potato and onion and a light white peppery seasoning, all the ingredients need to be cut using a "chipping/ slicing" method, as all the filling is UNCOOKED, the ingredients needs to be quite thin. Just before sealing, place a knob of butter and some flour. 15 minutes at 200°c and then about an hour at 150°c. Exquisite!
the lovely vivien, sue and ? (sorry)... They are all back July the 12th, do not miss out, absolutely FABULOUS!
Yet, I find so many variations available everywhere: Steak and Stilton, Cheese and Onion, Vegetarian, Mixed Mushrooms, Chicken and Leek, Creamy Corn, even Chilli con Carne and Thai Red Curry and DO NOT get me started with all those sweet pasty ones. All very delicious, I know, as I have tasted them.

So why is a FISH pasty so terribly challenging to find! THAT is the question I am asking my fellow followers.

Sculpture of the Month - You can do it! You can do it!

This is Alfredo, he is retired. He has tried morris dancing, he has tried miniature matchstick boat building and he has even tired to start his own pet grooming business. Nothing! Nothing gives him THAT buzz, not like golf does.

He loves his golf and plays EVERYDAY. Bright and early, each morning, he puts on his dapper colourful clothes, his callaway oxford tassel fringe metal spikes shoes, his bonny hat and off he goes.

His handicap, I hear you ask... Well, that depends on who you ask. As the saying goes "It is not the destination, but the journey that matters"and he is happy just playing. So as Alfredo often repeats to himself... "You can do it! You can do it!"

Painting of the Month - Fowey Boys

Let me see now, how do I explain this painting...

Well, seeing that Fowey is pronounced like Boy, Dino thought that it would be funny, to play on the phrase "Toy Boys" and instead call the painting "Fowey Boys"

If you look carefully at each of the lovely ladies, they are a little grey and mature, and if you look at the handsome chaps, they all tend to be a little younger and more virile
now let us examine the players in this painting:

We have:

1. & 2. Former flower child Linda, first burnt her bra in the 60’s,    and now relishes disrobing completely, with the local surf champ, Kelly

3. & 4. Retired biology teacher, Mrs Robinson, enjoys the sunshine  with the young graduate Dustin
5. & 6. Mavis, the long serving Librarian from Cornwall Council and avid cricket fan, spends the day with Desmond, her West Indian fast bowler
7. & 8. Golf widow, Hillary, meets up with the groundsman, Fernando, from the Country Club, as her husband tees off

Sculpture of the Month - Jump... Jump!!

This is Giorgio, he works for Cornwall Council as a librarian, however, he also has a part time job in a circus.

Giorgio loves collecting antique nautical charts, his favourite drink is champagne and he has 14 pet cats.

He has tried and tried to get into the film industry, wanting his pets to be stars. At the moment he is busy training Ginger, she is supposingly the brightest one in the bunch. But he is having a little trouble getting her to jump. Today she is particularly stubborn, grumpy and definitely not co-operating

The whip is just a tactic, Giorgio would never hit Ginger. He just keeps on saying "Jump, Jump!". Will she jump?

Painting of the Month - Fowey River Mussels with Leeks and Cider

Here is the super duper chef, Carlo, cooking up one his favourite dishes...

Nothing beats a steaming pot of mussels, freshly fished out of the lovely Fowey estuary, all plump and juicy, with some seasonally grown leeks and Cornish cider.

So why not try Fowey River Mussels with Leeks and Cider, the recipe on the painting is a great one.

What can I say, it is scrumptious!

The Cornish Cow, friend or foe?

I always thought that the humble, placid, gentle cow was our friend. She would go about her daily duty quite diligently, and as long as she had some grass, an open field, and some other cows with her, she would be a very happy camper. I have been told that this is NOT the case.
The coastal walks around these areas are particularly dramatic and remarkable, extremely wondrous, enjoyable and rewarding. We have walked most of them and have even attempted a few coastal runs, very challenging indeed, poor Dino ends up pushing me up most of hills... the down bit is easy enough
We particularly love the walk from St Catherine's Castle to Polkerris Beach, and upon arrival, we then treat ourselves to a cool G & T at the Rashleigh. AHHHHHH, heaven. Along this path, you will find, Polridmouth (pronounced PRIDMOTH, go figure), a lovely sight to behold, and so too is the view from Gribbin Head (a day mark-painted red and white). The Hall Walk is also really gorgeous.

There are loads of chirpy birds, have seen an eagle thingy, a few field mice, and plenty of lovely cows. The cows seem so sweet, content, and quite docile, I would even like to go up to them and give them a big hug. But, no, I am told. Cows are very dangerous. Did you know this? Cows can be dangerous! They have been known to maim and even kill walkers. A cow! Not a bull… A cow!
Check this statistic out - Health and Safety Executive figures show that over 481 people have been injured by cows in the past eight years. One farmer has told me to carry a plastic plumbers tube, his words "Give 'em a good whack on the nose if they get too close!"... Really, I am NOT going to do that!

Dino and I will continue to go for our leisurely walks, but what we will do is be alert, very alert. Watch your back!
